The Liberal Democrats have successfully stopped Nigel Farage’s attempt to pull the UK out of the European Convention on Human Rights, defeating his Ten Minute Rule Bill in Parliament.

In a decisive vote of 154 to 96, MPs rejected Farage’s proposal after the Liberal Democrats forced the division.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have accused Welsh Labour MPs of failing to stand up to Farage’s and Reform’s authoritarian politics after 25/27 Welsh Labour MPs failed to vote against Farage's proposals, including MPs here in Swansea.

Liberal Democrat Lead Candidate for Gwyr Abertawe, Cllr Sam Bennett said:

“Nigel Farage tried to tear up the rights that protect people across Wales and the UK, and only the Liberal Democrats stood in his way.

“The ECHR defends the rights that matter most – from protecting families to holding those in power to account. What on earth were Labour’s Tonia Antoniazzi and Torsten Bell thinking when they decided not to turn up to vote?

“The Liberal Democrats are ambitious for Wales, and will keep on fighting for a nation built on compassion, decency and respect for the rule of law.”
